Why I Started The Donkey Coffee Co.

I started The Donkey Coffee Co. because too much home coffee is either bitter, boring or buried in coffee-snob nonsense.

I wanted coffee with proper flavour, a smooth finish and no need for a tasting dictionary. So I built a small UK-roasted range around one simple promise: serious coffee that is stubbornly smooth.

Every coffee in the range is chosen to be easy to enjoy, easy to understand and good enough for the first cup of the day. No flavour theatre. No bitterness dressed up as sophistication. Just coffee with backbone.

Chosen for smoothness - We look for coffees with body, sweetness and a clean finish - not harsh, sharp or overly bitter cups.

Roasted in the UK - Our coffees are roasted in small batches, then packed and sent fresh.

Plain-English flavour - You will see notes like toffee, chocolate, pecan and plum - not a paragraph of coffee nonsense.

Frequently Asked
Questions

Need Help? We've got you covered!

What coffee should I start with?

Start with what you already like.

If you want something smooth. moreish and easy to love, go for The Donkey. It has notes of pecan, toffee and milk chocolate, so it is a safe first pick for most people.

If you like your coffee darker, richer and more full-bodied, try The Dark Horse. More backbone. More depth. No messing about.

If you want something a little brighter, sweeter and more playful, The Mustang is your bag. Still smooth, but with a bit more strut.

No jargon. No guessing game. Just choose the one that sounds most like your kind of cup.

When will my order arrive?

We aim to get your coffee moving quickly, because nobody wants to be left staring at an empty mug.

Your order will usually arrive within 4 business days, so you can go from “I need better coffee” to “that’s more like it” without waiting around for ages.

Once your coffee is on its way, you’ll receive your usual order updates so you know where it is.

Good coffee should be worth waiting for - but not for too long.

What happens if I choose the wrong coffee?

That is what our No Bitter Regrets Guarantee is for.

Choosing coffee online can feel like a gamble, especially when every bag seems to promise “notes of forest mist, jazz and plum skin”. We would rather keep it simple.

If your first choice is not quite right, tell us. We will help point you towards a better match so your next bag is much more your thing.

You should not be stuck with coffee you do not enjoy. Life is too short for disappointing brews.

Can I buy it ground, or is it beans only?

Choose the option that suits how you brew.

If you have a grinder at home, whole bean is a great choice because it keeps the coffee fresher for longer. If you prefer convenience, ground coffee keeps things simple and gets you brewing straight away.

The important bit is matching the grind to your method. Cafetière, filter and espresso all need slightly different grinds, so choose the one that fits your setup.

No judgement either way. The best coffee is the one you will actually make and enjoy.

How much coffee is in each bag?

Most coffees are available in 250g bags, with 1kg bags available if you want to stock up properly. Choose the size that suits your mornings.

How much is delivery?

Delivery is £2.95 on orders under £30. Orders over £30 qualify for free delivery.

What should I do if my order arrives damaged?

If your order arrives damaged, get in touch as soon as possible and include your order number and a photo of the damage. We will sort it quickly with a replacement or another fair fix.

How can I pay?

You can pay securely using the payment options available at checkout, including major cards, Shopify-supported payment methods and PayPal.

Do I need special equipment to brew it?

No. Use what you already have.

Donkey Coffee is made for real kitchens, not just coffee lab counters.

It works well with common home brewing methods like cafetière, filter, AeroPress and espresso machines.

The main thing is choosing the right grind for how you brew. Once you have that, you are away.

Better coffee should make your morning easier, not give you homework.

How fresh is the coffee when it arrives?

Fresh enough to make the upgrade worthwhile.

Coffee is at its best when it has been roasted properly, packed well and not left gathering dust for months. We want your coffee to arrive tasting like it should: smooth, full of flavour and ready to earn its place in your morning routine.

Keep it sealed, store it somewhere cool and dry, and try not to leave it open next to the toaster like a complete animal.

Good coffee deserves a little respect.

Why is it called The Donkey Coffee Co.?

Because donkeys have backbone.

They are stubborn, dependable, memorable and full of character. We like that. It felt like the right mascot for a coffee brand that does not want to be bland, bitter or forgettable.

The name came from a real donkey encounter that proved one thing very clearly: donkeys remember.

So do people when a brand has a bit of personality.

That is the idea behind The Donkey Coffee Co. - serious coffee, stubbornly smooth, with enough character to stand out.

I usually drink supermarket coffee. Will I notice the difference?

Yes, you should.

Most supermarket coffee has been sitting around longer than it should, and a lot of it is roasted for shelf life rather than flavour. That can leave it tasting flat, dry, bitter or just a bit dull.

Donkey Coffee is for people who want a better cup at home without turning coffee into a full-time personality. You do not need to know extraction theory. You do not need a beard, a stopwatch or a £3,000 machine.

You just need better coffee in the bag.

What does “stubbornly smooth” actually mean?

It means we are fussy about smoothness.

Every coffee we sell needs to have enough character to earn its place in the herd, but it also needs to be enjoyable cup after cup. Rich is good. Bitter is not. Bold is good. Burnt is not. Interesting is good. Confusing is not.

So “stubbornly smooth” is our way of saying we do not chase harsh, sour or overly complicated coffee. We want coffee that tastes good, feels good and keeps you coming back.

A bit like a donkey, really. Strong-minded, dependable and not easily forgotten.

Is this proper coffee or just nice branding?

It is proper coffee. The donkey just makes it harder to forget.

Yes, we care about the name, the packaging and the personality. But none of that matters if the coffee in the bag is average.

Each coffee is chosen around a clear taste profile, so you know what you are buying before you brew it. Smooth, rich, sweet, balanced and easy to enjoy at home.

The brand has a bit of bite. The coffee does too. Just not the bitter kind.

Is Donkey Coffee bitter?

No. That is the whole point.

We like coffee with depth, richness and character. We do not like coffee that tastes burnt, harsh or like it has been roasted out of spite.

Donkey Coffee is chosen for a smoother finish, so you still get proper flavour without that rough, bitter edge. Strong coffee does not need to punish you.

That is why we say: coffee with backbone, not bitterness.
